Guide
Apple trees are
available as dwarf or semi-dwarf. Pear is available in standard forms.
Peach and nectarine varieties are sold on standard rootstock, and
reach about 12 feet. Plum, apricot and cherry are grafted onto seedling
rootstocks which impart cold hardiness, improved root systems and
soil tolerance, but are not dwarfing. Expect them to grow 15 to 20
feet in height with a similar spread.
Dwarf vs. Standard Trees
Dwarf and semi-dwarf trees naturally require less space, are easier
to harvest and maintain, and bear at a younger age. Dwarf trees grow
between 6-10 feet tall, and should bear fruit at 2-3 years after planting,
depending on the cultivar. With dwarf trees you can pick and maintain
from the ground!
Semi-dwarf trees
grow 11-15 feet in height. When planting the dwarf trees preferred
by most part-time orchardists allow at least 6-8 feet between trees;
put 14-16 feet between semi-dwarf.
